Spring is Here!
Spring is here

Even though the air outside is still a little chilly, the spring season officially began earlier this week! As we near the end of the school year and summer begins to call our names, we can easily get bogged down or discouraged by the everyday tasks in our lives. Homework, chores and other responsibilities start to seem burdensome when the freedom of summer is right around the corner… and when then countdown to Kamp is getting shorter!

But with spring, comes hope, because it’s a season of newness and growth. The flowers begin to bloom, and the harsh winter cold no longer keeps us snuggled up indoors. Isn’t it refreshing to see new growth in God’s creation? He feels the same way about us! It brings our Father joy to see His children growing in their faith and blooming with each passing season of life. When we first accept Jesus, something entirely new happens inside us. Our relationship with Christ changes how we live our lives and the lens through which we view the world. As we read in 2 Corinthians 5:17, Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. How beautiful is it that God has the power and grace to make our hearts and lives brand new?

From this newness, the world can see a difference in those of us that have a relationship with Jesus. Others around us should be able to recognize that there is something new and special taking place within us. Ephesians 4:22-24 tells us what that looks like.

“That, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self… And that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”

As Christians, we are called to be Christ-like. Of course, we can’t be like our perfect Savior entirely, but we can do our best to be the example of His characteristics to the world. As new creations in Christ, we put away our old, worldly selves and become His faithful servants on earth. As His servants and His children, we represent Christ in our actions and the way we treat others.

God wishes for us to exemplify our “new selves” in all aspects of our lives all the time, not just when we are new Christians. Sharing Christ’s love with the world is our lifelong calling as His children. And it’s an incredible responsibility that we get to be a part of! Even though we can get run down with daily tasks and responsibilities from time to time, we will always have the opportunity for new growth in Christ. The way we foster this growth and avoid becoming discouraged is to stay refreshed in God’s Word. Matthew 4:4 says, “But He answered and said, ‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

God’s Word is our encouragement, instruction and hope for everything that we may encounter in this world. God didn’t make us a new and wonderful creation then leave us alone to continue growing all by ourselves. He gave us His wonderful Word to sustain us and guide us, as written in Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet, And a light to my path.”

God’s Word is there to guide and support us as we fulfill our command to share Christ-like love with the world. As new creations in Christ, let’s lean on His Word to grow in our faith together and share it with others around us! As the flowers bloom and the air warms this spring, will you savor your newness in Christ and grow in Him with each day that passes?
