Purpose of Praise

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!” Psalm 150:6

Psalm 150 is an emphatic call to thanksgiving, pleading with us to praise God at all times in every way. In fact, it’s not just mankind that should thank Him -  it’s “everything that has breath!” What an amazing privilege it is to worship a Creator who is worthy of every creature’s gratitude!

Why is praise so important, and what does it look like in the life of a believer? 1 Peter 1:7 puts it this way:

“...so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

The proof of our faith is our praise. For followers of Christ, faith that withstands the test of hardship and difficulty will “result in praise” - meaning that, no matter the circumstance, those who hope in Jesus have a reason to rejoice! Praise produced by a tested faith manifests itself in a peaceful countenance and steadfast confidence in God’s absolute control over our circumstances. When we continually trust in His unconditional goodness, we can always find a reason to thank Him!

Praise shapes our perspective and can change the trajectory of our day. When we prioritize recognizing God’s faithfulness and the ways He’s blessed us, we shift our focus from ourselves and our problems to God and His strength.

This assurance enables us to move forward boldly, proclaiming His truth and living in adherence to His Word. Our obedience glorifies God and brings us into oneness with Him - resulting in… you guessed it: Praise! This is the beautiful pattern God designed in His children for His glory and our good.
